What if?

What if my talents resemble

a child’s sandcastle on the shore

while others are built of stone

on mountaintops grandeur?

~

What if the crops I’ve planted

only yield some lowly grain

while others have mined diamonds

and other costly things?

~

What if the life I live

only leaves an etch in stone

while others have hewn marble monuments

when they’re warmly welcomed home?

~

What if I joyfully accept

the humble lot God’s given me

investing it with all I’m worth

for interest eternally?

The comparison  game really isn’t appropriate for Christians to engage in. Our mandate is to trust and obey God; we are also called to make disciples. A spinster I know works faithfully at her day job quietly and reliably. She also serves faithfully in children’s ministries year after year in her church. I would not describe her as a glamorous woman; however, I believe she is potentially the most beautiful woman, from her fellowship, in the eyes of God. I admire her!

May we invest the talent we’ve been given.

A New Creation

Before the Lord found me

as a lost and lonely one

I was much like the prodigal

a disappointing son

My spirit had been rebellious

as I wandered from His arms

to squander away my youth

I thought I’d reach great heights

My wings got tattered and torn

and off the ground He lifted me

Through Christ I’ve been reborn.

Before I became a mother, I loved to decorate and rearrange furniture and accessories regularly. Now that I have three teenagers and osteoarthritis I have not been hauling sofas across our old fir floors like I used to do in the old days. I’m much more likely to ask my young men to move stuff, or just leave everything as is. I save my muscle power for gardening and other outdoor activities; however, with blogging I am enjoying using my decorating passions in each post and blog.

I say all this to introduce you to, yet, another blog that I have started specifically for Christians and seekers of God. The catch with the new blog is that it will be best used in conjunction with the world’s most famous Christian devotional:

My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers.

I highly recommend this book. In the new blog I will post a poem, picture, and scripture verse. The posts will be short but succinct.  Each poem will encapsulate the main points of one devotional from Oswald’s book.

So if you have a copy of My Utmost for His Highest in your home, you may want to dig it out along with your Bible so you can make the most of each poem I hope to share with you. I will start posting this coming Monday. But in the meantime here is the link to the first page:

http://mypoetryforhishighest.wordpress.com

Let me know what you think. Please be sure to check out the about page where I explain the blog purpose. I look forward to seeing as many of you there as He wills. I will still be posting

The Word With Wendy on Wednesdays right here.

Blessings from a passionate poet who loves to decorate ~ Wendy

PS – You are most welcome to visit/follow my new blog with or without a copy of Oswald Chamber’s book. 🙂

Waiting Out the Storm

Waiting Out the Storm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m sinking beneath this heaviness
The lifeline appears barbed by shame
What point to grab onto something
that will only prolong the pain
~
It all seems so pointless – so endless
One trial leading into the next
Joylessness smothering my days
and oppressive thoughts filling my head
~
But I remember well this place
I’ve been here so many times before
And in each instance – God’s rescued me
I just need to wait out the storm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was raised in a home that did not involve faith in Christ. When my dad’s  health plummeted, because of his maturing bi-polar mental illness, my parents broke up. Thankfully I was being prayed for by people outside my family. Eventually, at age 20, I started to seek God and felt His call on my life.  As a newly born-again Christian I prayed for my family. My dad professed faith in Jesus before his death in 1998. I am still praying and waiting for my other relatives to know Christ.

Moodiness is common among creative people. I have struggled off and on with depression since I was a young child. It is not something I strain myself over anymore. Sometimes you just have to do the next thing and wait out the storm. I am blessed in that I do not require medication to manage my moodiness. But I am perfectly willing to use it if I need to in the future.

Because of my family history, I have a tender spot in my heart for the mentally ill. They are courageous people who fight battles (often daily) that the rest of us may never have to face.

I sometimes wonder, of all the battles the Psalmist David fought, if depression was his toughest. Like the shepherd turned king, I turn to the King of Kings for my help in troubled times.

I know that I got kinda personal here… but I just want anyone else who ever struggles to be encouraged that you are not alone, and our God will not leave you like imperfect people tend to do during the difficult times.

My blues motivated me to dig into Oswald Chamber’s devotional as my midday encouragement.

My Utmost for His Highest

was a huge blessing to me this summer. I’ll have more to share about this at a later date.

Unconditional Love

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Unconditional Love

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love opens up the heart
as sunshine does a flower
In the security of its arms
it enables and empowers
~
Love brings out the beauty
as the sun awakens day
It rejoices in what is lovely
revealing faith that has prayed
~
Love nourishes and builds up
as raindrops reaching roots
It’s steadfast through all seasons
believing the best and the truth
~
Love is not a fleeting feeling
but an action quite devout
It’s commitment and sacrifice
even when the fun’s run out.
In August, Ian and I will have been married for thirty years. I am full of thanksgiving to the Lord for being our strength and joy through the fun times and the difficult times. Life is not easy; however, the journey of life has truly been twice as nice shared with my best friend.
 God has used marriage and parenthood to teach me what unconditional love is: staying the course even when it hurts. We’ve been blessed to have more ups than downs. Being totally committed is like having a rose garden arbor secured with cement rather than simply placing the posts, as is, into the earth. Our relationship is made Rock solid by both our faith and our focus – Jesus Christ is the Cornerstone of our marriage.
Her Healing Faith
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For twelve long years – shunned

for a wound that would not heal

When the Word in flesh walked her way

what else, but hope, to feel?

~

She did the unthinkable

 Untouchable she’d so long been

Her humble and trembling hand

 tentatively touched his hem – unseen

~

He knew not only her hearts cry

plus years of tears in plea

but also each line and crease of her palm

 acquainted with her intimately

~

While others denied it was them

who dared to touch his cloak

She fell trembling at his feet

 emboldened by healing she spoke

~

Jesus needed no answer

for he knew before she’d tell

His desire was to give her blessing

upon her faith that made her well.

Have you ever experienced the healing hand of the Lord in a way that let you know it was definitely from him and definitely in response to your faith? Here is a link to a post where I shared about an answer to a personal prayer of my own twelve years in waiting…

Dear Healer of hearts and broken bones,

Help us to believe that You are able to do anything. May we come to You humbly and with faith that whatever the answer You give to our prayers is – it is enough. You are all that we need.

A Temple of Truth

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
A Temple of Truth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Her prayer’s passion is not to be

a whitewashed tomb that others see

nor a temporal temple that’s fading fast

or a clapboard chapel not made to last

The sinner’s song that she doth sing

is Amazing Grace before her King

Her heart’s altar is washed with red –

the color that her dear Savior bled

Her deepest desire is that she’d grow

so like her Lord that it would show

within her eyes and upon her lips

to draw others nigh his precious gift

Not a closed down church with empty pews

But a heart overflowing with Good News

To any and all that are brought her way

that she’d be a temple of his Spirit each day.

Wendy/2013

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m not very good at attending church in a stoic fashion.
My eyes tend to well up with tears during praise and worship time,
and my cheeks burn with guilt when a sermon touches my heart.
 It is so hard not to shout out with joy when I remember that I am saved
and that He has no plans of abandoning the project he’s begun in me.
  My life before walking with Christ was, to put it bluntly–stupid.
Faith is real and personal to me.
 I didn’t inherit it from my non-church parents.
It’s not a game.
  I’m in it for keeps and have lost some old friends
and have been abandoned by some family members.
Jesus is my all in all.
 I love much, because I’ve been forgiven much.
Temple of Truth Blessings ~ Wendy
Dear Living Lord,
I have no regrets to have lost my old life and, now, to be found in You.
 My heart beats because of your healing hand upon me.
Shine through the cracks of my old shattered life
and be glorified in this temple of your making.
Love from one alive in You.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live,
who loved me and gave himself for me.
Redemption Red
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him… After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:14, 17-18

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Redemption Red

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the door of my heart
painted redemption red
is the Lord’s own signature
His promise for which He bled
One day I’ll leave this abode
to enter eternity’s gate
for all those who’ve said, “Yes!”
to the invitation that He gave
The cross proclaims forgiveness
as He paid our debts in full
He’s now risen to make a home
for all He’s chosen to go
No cost, no catch, no chivalry
just a confession of our sin
A turning from it to Christ instead
as his Spirit enters in
And as we yield to his control
our actions show that we’re true
empowered to win the fight by faith
in all we think, say, or do.
Wendy/2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Salvation is a gift. Good works only demonstrate the results of the saving work and grace of God. The righteous deeds glorify (reveal/show) God’s attributes – but are not a payment for his mercy. They are the result of it and the evidence that a person is born-again.

When we’re invited into his round table we are clothed with his armor of righteousness. He made it and gave it. Under his coaching we show chivalry. But we did not earn our place as a King’s knight – we were invited.  The glory is ALL his.

Redemption Blessings ~ Wendy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear King of Kings,
Help me to remember that there is no lesser than or greater than midst your knights. Each has been saved by grace. May I remain properly humble and grateful for this gift of salvation. You have an armor for me to wear into battle – not shame or condemnation.
Gratefully yours,
a knight for the King’s service
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to receive wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

A Mother’s Heart is Always on Shift

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 36:5-7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Mother’s Heart is Always on Shift
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She relieves weary limbs

that have carried them both

Resting

Awaiting the arrival of her new gift

She keeps a watchful eye

A mother’s heart is always on shift

Soon untried limbs emerge

Wobbly

But carrying their own weight

Yet the burden of care does not lift

from her life

A mother’s heart is always on shift

Grown into a yearling and shooed away

Naturally

The cycle of life continues

The doe’s belly swollen enough to split

She raises two – this time

A mother’s heart is always on shift

I wonder if she remembers

offspring

each speckled fawn now grown

raising a family of their own – adrift?

Does she carry them in her thoughts?

A mother’s heart is always on shift.

Wendy/2013

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve watched several doe and their fawns during the years we lived in the woods. Special moments like a newborn barely able to stand and almost tumbling as mother cleaned the signs of birth from its fur are etched in my mind. My toddler son and I watched this special event from our old front porch.
Animals have been given instincts that often surpass those of some human parents; however, I don’t believe deer carry their offspring in their hearts for life – like we do. I suspect that only those made in the image of God have that capacity.
A parent’s heart is never off shift! I know that my Heavenly Father never sleeps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you, Father, that you do not forsake me. Help me to have forgiveness and compassion upon those who did abandon me either physically or emotionally. You are all that I have ever needed. You are more than enough… xo

Flickering Candles

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live… That they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of  God.
Titus 2:3-5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Flickering Candles
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mother – I am frightened

as the candles on my cake

steadily increase in number

with each one that you bake

Each flame flickers brightly

illuminating the finish line

waving me past childhood

as womanhood draws nigh

I sense the ushering in

and feel like Peter Pan

wanting to flee growing up

and dwell in Neverland

Where cakes are but treats

and candles simply lights

not milestones of aging years

that fill my heart with fright

Yet, Mother, I look at you

and see that you’ve made peace

graciously with aging life

in the way that you speak

Candlelight reflects prettily

on your silver strands of hair

midst youthful lingering browns

brought by gifts and earthly cares

The shadows in your wrinkles

can’t hide the love lines on your face

nor the joys ahead unspeakable

in my own coming of age.

Wendy/2013

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many things have changed in our culture even from when I was just coming of age. Unlike Neverland, our children will grow older along with us.  They will reach adulthood and become our friends and not just our children.
However, some things remain constant.  God never changes.  He desires mothers to instruct their daughters to live godly lives.  Fathers tend to teach more through example to both sons and daughters.
Remembering that children learn more from what we do than from what we say is a sobering reminder of the awesome privilege and responsibility we have as parents.  But if we are loving God with all of our heart, soul,  strength, and mind – we will be leading them aright!
PS – I wrote this the morning after our daughter’s recent birthday. She had come upstairs the night before to express concern about getting closer to adulthood. We both comforted and reassured her that it was a good thing to be growing up. She is honored that I wrote a poem about her. We are honored to be her parents.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Unchanging One,

Help us in this ever-changing world to keep our focus on You.  May our children yield to and trust in You also.

Putting my hope in Christ,

an aging parent

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
The Sting
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

James 1:19-20

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~

The Sting

~~~~~~~~~
Oh, the sting of it!
Do remind me
to turn the other cheek
while crimson
rushes to my temples
that I’d be slow to speak
Slow down this hurried heart
that pounds war drums
urging me into battle
against another one
May I feel the slap
as a pinch
to remind me I’m alive
and that I need to react
with gentleness and respect
and love within my eyes
How often have I been
in need of such grace?
And so –
remind me that soon
the tables may turn
and put me
in their place.
Several weeks ago I wrote this after having had my feelings hurt by the words of another.  It calmed me down and joy returned. Then I went on to write one of my best romantic poems: The Charmed Garden.
When I was face to face with my dear one again, I was greeted immediately with an apology and a kind smile.  Thanks to my submission to James 1:19-20…  I was ready to smile back.
Our home is laced with hormones these days.  Three teens and a mama (about to enter the change) reside here; however, so does the Holy Spirit!
